Arctus Aluminium

Arctus Aluminium Ltd, Iceland, in cooperation with IceTec, has developed a breakthrough aluminium process using multiple vertical inert (non-consumable) metallic anodes and ceramic cathodes in a low-temperature (800°C) electrolyte. Only oxygen is emitted instead of CO2 since no carbon anodes are used.

Arctus has reached proof of concept by producing high-quality aluminium in laboratory cells and is now scaling up the cells with an industrial partner for a pilot plant in 2024 and a demonstration plant in 2027.

Arctus will upgrade old Primary Aluminium Smelters by selling process cells with inert anodes and cathodes, along with auxiliary equipment for carbon-free aluminium production, and will do the same for new greenfield Primary Aluminium Smelters.

ROLE IN THE PROJECT

In the REVEAL project, Arctus will mainly participate in Work Package 2 (Power to Al) and, in cooperation with IceTec, will continue the development of CO2-free aluminium production with vertical inert electrodes in electrolytic cells and laboratory operation of the cells.

Additionally, Arctus, in cooperation with IceTec, is responsible for developing the process for producing granulated aluminium for oxidation reactions in Work Package 4 (Al to Energy). Furthermore, Arctus is leading the activities in closing the material cycle (Work Package 5) by recycling the aluminium oxide from the Al-to-Energy reactor to produce aluminium.
